One of my passions and specialist collections is the 1909-29 New Zealand Penny Dominion. My other (much larger) specialist area is the 1901 New Zealand Penny Universal but I see two threads started on that little beauty already so I don't want to steal someone else's thunder…..

The major flaws of the Dominions are particularly striking and easily identified. They are not particularly rare but, yes, they are uncommon. The flaws that follow will cost a reasonable amount of cash in UHM but they can be readily got from any of the larger dealers, just open the wallet wide enough!

However, it is a far different story trying to get these flaws in VFU condition. I have all these flaws postal used, fiscally used and script cancelled just to add to the complexity.

They are still catalogued quite high but nowhere near as high as the difficulty of finding them nicely used would indicate.

Enough of the preamble, let's have a look at just 16 of the classic flaws. (you may have guessed by now that you will be here for the next 20 minutes or so..... )

No 1.
The "Q" Flaw where the "O" of ONE has a flaw through it that makes it look like a "Q"

No 8. An example of damage to both the left and right sheilds. Also a classic example of the plate being over-inked giving the very smeared appearance at the top of the stamp.

No 15. This flaw is know as the "False Feather" flaw. The classic feather flaw is white as shown above but this flaw is the inverse to the classic.

And finally in this lot is
No 16. The "Split Globe" flaw again but this time overprinted with OFFICIAL.

I hope you have enjoyed this small presentation of just a few of the flaws found in the Penny Dominion. Anyone further interested in the plate positions where these flaws are found just let me know and I can list them for you.

Cheers

Roly
