On October 9, 1988 the USA issued this 44c airmail/international letter rate stamp (Sc #C117) to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the settlement of New Sweden (mostly Delaware) by Swedish and Finnish immigrants. This stamp is a joint issue including Sweden and Finland. Interestingly, the Swedish and Finnish stamps are wider format, and the group of negotiators depicted is 5, rather than 3. It appears that the USPS did not want to vary the commemorative stamp size/format it had used for more than 50 years. From USPS, "New Sweden was established in 1638 by Peter Minuit of the New Sweden Company...The Lenni-Lenape Indians , who inhabited the area, welcomed and befriended the new settlers." |

On November 21, 1984 Hong Kong issued a four-stamp set commemorating the centenary of the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club. Each of the four values depict the same jockey image on the right of the design, but show a different charitable activity of the Club on the left of the stamp. The subject of the 40c value (SG #462) is the Club's support for health care and features a nurse with an infant. |

Here is the USA's October 9, 2009 44c stamp (Sc #4434) commemorating Kwanza. The artist for the stamp is Lloyd McNeill, a NYC-based painter and jazz flutist. From about.usps.com, With this colorful stamp, the United States Postal Service celebrates Kwanza, a nonreligious holiday that takes place over 7 days from December 26 to January 1. Kwanza draws on African traditions and takes its name from the phrase for 'first fruits' in Swahili, a widely spoken African language." |
