Here is the 80 + 40 (pf) value (Mi #1172) from the Federal Republic of Germany's April 12, 1983 sports charity set of 2 stamps. The designer has used stop-motion imagery to show a gymnast's movement. This imaging technique was pioneered by British photographer and inventor Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904), who did photographic studies of humans and animals in motion. |

These two 5 d stamps (Sc #s L1 and L6) of Australian Antarctic Territory were issued on December 16, 1959 (#L1) and July 5, 1961 (#L6). They commemorate the 1908-9 Shackleton Expedition at the South Magnetic Pole. The brown stamp is part of a 4-stamp set with the 2 lower values issued with surcharges. The close-up pic shows an off-center, two-part (first white, then black) overprint with part of the "4" of " 4 D" being exposed. Stamps and photograph depict Douglas Mawson, Alistair MacKay and Edgeworth David on January 9, 1909 at what they believe to be the South Magnetic Pole. From wikipedia, They walked a total of 1260 miles to reach the South Magnetic Pole while pulling sledges and supplies that weighed approximately 670 lbs. Fearing starvation, they strictly rationed their biscuits down to crumbs...However, there is now some doubt as to whether their location was correct." |
