The scene on this 1950, 20c pictorial definitive stamp (Sc #242) of Mauritius is of a drowned, female shipwreck victim and two grieving men. Stamp is inscribed "Legend of Paul and Virginia".

From wikipedia, "Paul et Virginie is a novel by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de St. Pierre, first published in 1788. The story is set on the island of Mauritius under French rule, then named Ile de France."

Virginia left a life of luxury in France to return to her childhood friend, and later her lover, Paul. She dies in a storm at Mauritius, and to end the story, Paul dies of grief.

Here is Tunisia's 1944, 1.50 + 8.50 (fr) "Victory" stamp. A trio of British, French and American soldiers is shown.

On April 4, 2002 the USA issued a sheet of 50 different, 34c "Greetings from America" stamps designed to look like 1950's-60's postcards. Each stamp was a different U.S. state with the designs arranged alphabetically (Alabama to Wyoming) in the 5 x 10 pane. The Kentucky stamp (pos. 17, Sc #3577) depicts 3 jockeys on horses.

On October 25, 2002 after the first class domestic letter rate rose to 37c, the same designs were issued with the new rate.

Here is the 80 (centimes) value (Sc #643) from Switzerland's 1977-9 "Folk Customs" definitive series. Stamp depicts symbols/mascots of 3 societies of Kleinbasel.

On December 15, 1980 the Republic of South Africa issued a two-stamp set to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Paardekraal, which began the First Boer War. The "triumvirate" (3 Boer leaders) are depicted on the stamp: Piet Joubert, Paul Kruger and Marthinus Pretorius.

This 3c value (Sc #277) of the Fiji Islands is from the June23, 1969 set of three commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Fiji Military Force's (F.M.F.) participation in the Solomon Islands Campaign of WWII. The stamp depicts three light infantry soldiers of the F.M.F. with a map of the Solomon Islands as a backdrop.
