On May 18, 1946 Sarawak issued a set of four identically-designed stamps to commemorate the centenary (1841-1941) of the Raj of Sarawak. Stamps depict: Sir James Brooke (1803-1868), Sir Charles Vyner Brooke (1874-1936, third and last White Rajah of Raj of Sarawak) and Sir Charles Brooke (1829-1917, second White Rajah of Sarawak who succeeded his uncle, James Brooke). Note in Stanley Gibbons preceeding the listing of this set says, "The administration of Sarawak was returned to the Brooke family on 15 April 1946, but the Rajah, after consulting the inhabitants, ceded the territory to Great Britain on 1 June 1946." From wikipedia, "Sir James Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak, was a British soldier and adventurer who founded the Raj of Sarawak in Borneo. He ruled as the first White Rajah of Sarawak from 1841 until his death in 1868." |
