This May 23, 2012 "forever" (domestic letter rate) stamp is part of a "Great Film Directors" four-stamp set showing the directors and a scene from one of their movies. Stamps were issued se-tenant fashion in a single pane of twenty (4 x 5), in a manner that either blocks or horizontal strips of the 4 stamps could be collected. This stamp (Sc #5274) shows director Frank Capra (1897-1991) and a scene from his It Happened One Night (1934). Claudette Colbert is showing Clark Gable how to hitch a ride, after his attempts failed. From USPS, "The films of Frank Capra express his love for his adopted country. Capra was born in Sicily and came to the United States as a child." |

On June 3, 1970 Great Britain issued a set of 5 stamps to commemorate the centenary of the death of novelist Charles Dickens (1812-1870) and the 200th anniversary of the birth of poet William Wordsworth (1779-1850). One of the Charles Dickens stamps (SG #826), featuring David Copperfield and showing an illustration by Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882), depicts three persons. The original Browne illustration shows that the designer, Rosalind Dease, has edited/simplified some details for the stamp design. Betsey Trotwood and David Copperfield are still shown in the foreground, but in the background, one of the two men with the donkeys has been removed, and the figure on the right has been cropped out. |

This March 7, 2013 "forever" stamp (Sc #4748g) of the USA is from the sheet of twelve "Modern Art in America 1913-1931" self-adhesive stamps of varying sizes. The stamp shows Aaron Douglas's (1899-1979) painting The Prodigal Son (1927, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts). Douglas was a leading figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Unfortunately, the USPS image has removed about 95% of the color from this painting. From vmfaeducation.tumblr.com, " The Prodigal Son is based on the biblical parable about a father and his two sons. The younger son asks his father for his inheritance and after wasting his fortune becomes destitute. He shamefully returns home, expecting his relationship with his father to be severed, but instead his father welcomes him with open arms. The story is about redemption and forgiveness. Instead of depicting the story in conventional biblical times, Douglas creates the look and feel of a contemporary Harlem nightclub." |
