This one is little "off topic". However, the cancel is on the stamp. It is Himmelsthuer in Lower Saxony, Germany. Three children are shown holding hands and looking through a portal to the heavens. Himmel is heavens in the German language. The most significant piece of architecture in Himmelsthuer is an old church which is now Serbian Orthodox. |

Here is Germany's November 8, 2007 55c stamp (Mi #2628) commemorating the 800th birth anniversary of St. Elizabeth of Thuringia (1207-1231), also known as St. Elizabeth of Hungary. Stamp shows a circa 1375-1400 devotional image from Cologne. From wikipedia, "Elizabeth was married at the age of 14 and widowed at 20. After her husband's death she sent her children away and regained her dowry, using the money to build a hospital where she herself served the sick. She became a symbol of Christian charity after her death, at the age of 24 and was canonized on May 25, 1235." |
