This se-tenant strip of three (SG #s1785-7) is from a strip of 5 different 24 p designs executed in a scratchboard technique by designer Andrew Davidson and issued by Great Britain to commemorate the centenary of the publication of the Sherlock Homes story The Final Problem. Three human figures are shown on each of the 3 stamps. The third figure on the left stamp is framed between Holmes and the hound's back. From arthur-conan-doyle.com, "Arthur Conan Doyle wrote 62 stories of Sherlock Holmes published between 1887 and 1927. The 62 stories include 4 novels and 58 short stories. Within the short stories, 56 were serialized in the UK/US magazines and collected in the volumes known as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (x12), The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (x12), The Return of Sherlock Holmes (x13), His Last Bow (x7) and The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (x12), and two short stories were published for special occasions: The Field Bazaar (1896) and How Watson Learned the Trick (1924)." |
