This May 18, 1992 18 franc stamp (Sc #871) of Luxembourg was issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the general strike of 1942. The stamp depicts a bronze relief from the monument in Wiltz. From wikipedia, "The strike opposed a directive that conscripted young Luxembourgers into the Wehrmacht. A general strike originating in Wiltz paralyzed the country and led to the occupying German authorities responding violently by sentencing 21 strikers to death...Luxembourg's most famous 20th century sculptor, Lucien Wercollier created the two reliefs on the lighthouse displayed at the monument." |

On August 29, 1968 Liechtenstein issued a "Legends of Liechtenstein" set of three stamps. The 309 centimes values of the set is inscribed "Der Schatz auf St. Mamerten" (Eng.: The Treasure of St. Mamerten), and depicts three frightened boys and a large, aggressive dog. St. Mamerten Chapel is located in the Triesen municipality, and it was built around the 9th or 10th century. My search for information on the legend was not successful. |

The legend of St Mamerten can be found here : http://www.sagen.at/texte/sagen/lie...amerten.html Here is an online translation : THE TREASURE OF ST. MAMERTEN One evening a fellow from Triesen went to the little church of Sankt Mamerten to pray. Suddenly a spirit appeared to him, who said to him: "If you want to get rich, come here with two other boys at midnight. You will see a box that is full of gold, and a dog will sit on it. If you throw it down, all the gold that is in it shall be yours." The fellow really returned the next evening with two friends, and they knelt in a row in the pews. When the bell of the parish church struck the midnight hour, the box with the dog really appeared. The fellow, kneeling in the first bench, got up and tried to throw the animal down, but it jumped up, stared at him with fiery eyes, yapped and yelped, jumping from one side of the box lid to the other. "Come, help me!"gasped the youth. The second came, and when he too did not achieve anything, they called on the third. But he cried with a trembling voice: "Fear me !" Then they heard a roaring cry, and the dog and the box were gone. But the Spirit who appeared to the first came, weeping and lamenting, crying out:"Now I must wait another hundred years before I can ask anyone for help." |

Thanks vayolene! Here is Berlin's November 8, 1984 50 + 20 pf semi-postal charity Christmas stamp. St. Nicholas and two modern children are shown. From wikipedia, "Santa Claus evolved from Dutch traditions regarding Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas). When the Dutch established the colony of New Amsterdam, they brought the legend and traditions of Sinterklaas with them. Howard G. Hageman, of New Brunswick Theological Seminary, maintains that the tradition of celebrating Sinterklaas in New York existed in the early settlements of the Hudson Valley, although by the early nineteenth century had fallen by the way." |

On August 27, 1970, Liechtenstein issued a souvenir sheet of four stamps to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the birth of Bavarian knight and musical composer Wolfram von Eschenbach. The stamps of this souvenir sheet show illustrations of medieval singers taken from the Codex Manesse (ca. 1304), a volume/manuscript produced in Zuerich containing 140 such images. One of the four stamps from the sheet, the 50 rappen value (Sc #471b), depicts Reinmar the fiddler and two others. |
