One thing that I very much enjoy doing is matching cancels on stamps in my collection to issuing Post Offices. In most cases there is a place name or at least a partial place name to go by. More challenging are those stamps, usually quite elderly, that sport a numeral cancel.

I have managed to find good sources and lists for Great Britain, for Canada (mostly pre-Confederation), and for Scandinavia but this is as far as I go. Since starting with Germany, I have found that this type of postal marking is common here as well and I include some examples in this post. Apologies for stamp condition but with these it is the post mark I am after.

Can someone suggest a comprehensive catalogue list or web site that matches state to number to Post Office?

For interests sake, some examples in no particular order follow.

Check the "Album Weeds" series. Apart from being great for forgeries they also list lots of cancels

Comprehensive lists can be found here:
https://www.stampsx.com/ratgeber/st...atenbank.php

On the left side under the heading "Stempelbeispiele" you can find cancellation numbers and corresponding towns for Baden, Bavaria, Prussia, Saxony, and others. Site is in German but not too difficult to navigate.

The old Michel Germany Specialized catalogues, about 1999 and earlier, have lists of numeral cancels and other information that was subsequently deleted from the catalogues. I have a 2020 Specialized, but I'll never part with my 1999. Too useful. You can probably find one for $5.

Thank you to all. Some really interesting material available on the topic. I shall continue to keep my eye out for an older Michel catalogue as well but in all my browsing of second hand bookshops around here, that is something that I have never stumbled across.
