Plus the classic era stamps were engraved. If these were engraved I am sure they would be very sharp indeed.

Rev - not quite right- a few have had tagging.

rog - your cynicism is misplaced - current/recent US stamps are either offset or gravure printed, not engraved like classics were. The counterfeits I have seen vary from crude to decent but still of lower detail than real stamps.

I was pointing out that the USPS printer essentially said that their product sucks.

Given that the Chinese use the same technology and equipment to produce the fakes it is not a high bar to jump when the real thing is:

Quote:
Our printer has reviewed some retains and do not believe all of the P2222 stamps have blurred microtext. Throughout a print run there are multiple variables, including register float, ink transfer, blanket squeeze, water balance, PH and conductivity changes etc., so there can be some degradation in microtext and other print quality parameters. The press operators are continually monitoring these variables and making the necessary adjustments to correct and maintain print quality throughout production and the QA Department watch for this as well. We do not think this is related to the paper change. There should be no difference in overall microtext legibility between the P1111 and P2222 production other than the normal print variances/tolerances experienced during print runs.

I don't believe that the difference is always clearcut.

There are usually at least one or two specific spots on most counterfeits with sufficient variance to the genuine stamps make ID possible. Sometimes finding them requires sitting down with a good glass and some careful searching.

Just a follow-up: I sent one of the booklets to the American Philatelic Expertizing Service on received back the opinion that it is a "Untied States, Scott 5344, full booklet plane [sic] with inking flaw, unused. Genuine."

So what does that say about this all?

If this points out simply terrible vendor selection and quality control for the USPS, is that a surprise. This may simply be snafu and result in a stamp or stamps with little or no collectible value.
