Hi again! Going through a lot of Malaysian stamps and came across, according to the vendor, North Borneo SG102 and SG103 from 1897. My Specialized Scott does not make any note of variations in Scott 85, which I think is the same stamp. My simplified SG catalogue is not very helpful either. The only difference I'm seeing is a slight shade variation. I am hoping someone will be able to tell me the differences and if the stamps are tagged correctly. Thanks in advance! (I know, it's time get an SG Specialized...) Regards, Mick

I was on several sites and they note the difference is color. SG 102 is "Black/Brown purple" and SG 103 is "Black/Brown." |

The difference is the shades. Not sure that the stamps are identified correctly though. |

The stamps posted are all NB 1897 8c black and brown purple SG 102. This is what NB 1897 8c black and brown SG 103 looks like.

If you are collecting the whole set, here is a list of the Gibbons listings with their Scott number counterpart. There are some color shade differences, but most of the variation is found in the perforations. Some of these stamps only seem to exist in CTO form. So it might be an impossible set to collect in unused condition. The perforations with a dash are a range, so 13.5 - 14 means between the two. The ones marked compound mean they are not the same on all sides. The chart came from Excel, and some of the spacing was lost as I put it here.
Description SG Scott Perforation 1897 Defintive Set 92-109 79-88 1c Black & Bistre-Brown 92 79 13.5 - 14 1c Black & Bistre-Brown 92aa 79 16 1c Black & Bistre-Brown 92a 79 14.5 - 15 1c Black & Bistre-Brown 92b 79 13.5 - 14 compound 12 - 13 1c Black & Bistre-Brown 92d 79 12 - 13 1c Black & Ochre 93 79 13.5 - 14 1c Black & Ochre 93a 79 14.5 - 15 1c Black & Ochre 93b 79 13.5 - 14 compound 12 - 13 2c Black & Lake 94 80 13.5 - 14 2c Black & Lake 94a 80 14.5 - 15 2c Black & Lake 94b 80 13.5 - 14 compound 12 - 13 2c Black & Lake 94c 80 12 - 13 2c Black & Green 95 81 13.5 - 14 2c Black & Green 95a 81 14.5 - 15 2c Black & Green 95b 81 13.5 - 14 compound 12 - 13 2c Black & Green 95c 81 12 - 13 3c Green & Rosy-Mauve 96 82 13.5 - 14 3c Green & Rosy-Mauve 96a 82 14.5 - 15 3c Green & Rosy-Mauve 96b 82 13.5 - 14 compound 12 - 13 3c Green & Dull Mauve 97 82 13.5 - 14 4c Black & Green 98 103 13.5 - 14 4c Black & Green 98a 103 13.5 - 14 compound 12 - 13 4c Black & Carmine 99 104 13.5 - 14 4c Black & Carmine 99a 104 13.5 - 14 4c Black & Carmine 99b 104 14.5 - 15 4c Black & Carmine 99c 104 13.5 - 14 compound 12 - 13 4c Black & Carmine 99d 104 12 - 13 5c Black & Orange-Vermilion 100 83 13.5 - 14 5c Black & Orange-Vermilion 100a 83 14.5 - 15 5c Black & Orange-Vermilion 100b 83 13.5 - 14 compound 12 - 13 5c Black & Orange-Vermilion 100c 83 12 - 13 6c Black & Bistre-Brown 101 84 13.5 - 14 6c Black & Bistre-Brown 101a 84 14.5 - 15 6c Black & Bistre-Brown 101b 84 13.5 - 14 compound 12 - 13 8c Black & Brown-Purple 102 85 13.5 - 14 8c Black & Brown-Purple 102a 85 16 8c Black & Brown-Purple 102b 85 14.5 - 15 8c Black & Brown 103 85 13.5 - 14 8c Black & Brown 103a 85 14.5 - 15 8c Black & Brown 103b 85 16 10c Brown & Slate-Lilac 104 120 13.5 - 14 10c Brown & Slate-Blue 105 120 13.5 - 14 12c Black & Dull Blue 106 86 13.5 - 14 12c Black & Dull Blue 106b 86 14.5 - 15 12c Black & Dull Blue 106c 86 13.5 - 14 compound 12 - 13 12c Black & Dull Blue 106d 86 12 - 13 16c Green & Chestnut 107 121 13.5 - 14 16c Green & Chestnut 107a 121 14.5 - 15 18c Black & Green 108 87 16 18c Black & Green 108d 87 14.5 - 15 24c Blue & Lake 109 88 13.5 - 14 24c Blue & Lake 109a 88 13.5 - 14 compound 12 - 13 24c Blue & Lake 109b 88 12 - 13

No, it's white. It must have picked up the tint from the photo and size limit. What is strange is that it is cancelled, but still has the original gum. My great grandmother was big into hinging so I has one prominently displayed at the top. |

The Scott Classic Specialized catalog notes that "quantities of most North Borneo stamps through 1912 have been canceled to order with an oval of bars". That would explain the cancel on your stamp with original gum.

That would make sense as she had a number of North Borneo stamps with that cancellation in the lower left corner...Still with original gum. |

A expert would place both stamps in the same scan and not try to capture pictures off the internet to decide color because each camera ,scanner and computer is ajusted differently to capture color . |

Thank you all for your input. The SG listing taken from an excel sheet is most helpful. Cheers!

Quote: I know, it's time get an SG Specialized... A copy of Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth and British Empire Stamps 1840-1952 would be a great investment. It's a single volume, not very large, but immensely useful. Got mine used for very little, and so far it's all I've needed. |
