As I was going through this collection I noticed that the over prints for different years have a different quality. See below the 1943 v 1946:



Is this normal?

I have some in which the cut cancel obliterates a number in the date. Can I use the difference in type to eliminate one date or another? Or will if find variation within a single year?

It helps if you have the catalogue in front of you like I do. In 1943, the overprint still had 'SERIES' all caps. Starting with 1944 it switced to 'Series'. The font itself and size has varied over the years, but they are all depicted in the Scotts Specialized catalogue, and Documentary stamps seem to follow the same idea.

The type of overprints used on the 1940-52 issues varied every year by font size and thickness of the letters and numbers. This was done intentionally. Some sizes are very similar so it's not easy to say for certain what year you when when the last digit is missing or illegible.
