Help With Identification . China (Roc? Prc?)

The image is ROC PP1, Parcel Post, 500, green, 1949. Scott 2020 page 387. The only overprints noted are PRC 5LQ1-5 and 5LQ27-28.

The overprint is very close, but not identical to PRC East China Parcel Post 5LQ1, August 1, 1949. Scott 2020 page 496. Normally the image is the first stamp under the image.

Is this PRC East China Parcel Post 5LQ1? Since it's the first stamp under the image, you would think the overprints would match ...

Yes, it looks to me like the overprints match.

Now where does it say in Scott that the image shown MUST be of the first stamp in a set? That's typically the case, but there are a number of cases where that value was not available for photography and another of the set or series has been given as an example. perf12 and Scott shows the 2000 Yuan value of the set, not the 200 Yuan surcharge. I believe there are also still cases where the values have slightly different designs but Scott continues to lump them under one image. That's true here where at least the upper left value tablet is different for the original 5 million Yuan stamp from your original 500 Yuan stamp. There are also still unfortunate cases where a forgery or reprint is photographed, too.

The important parts of your stamp are:

Reading down, left column first is Shantung/Shandong, then "Post" at right.


The bottom line reads left to right, literally "two" "hundred" "Yuan". That's the Scott description of Scott 5LQ1.
