I'm needing a little guidance on two stamps I inherited from my great great aunt. She was a banker married to the mayor of a small town in Texas. I'm having a hard time determining if these two stamps are really the Scott Catalog Stamp 181 and 179. The paper on the back of the 181 is white with what appears to be no gum verse the 179 which has apparent gum. Can anyone help with these two stamps please
These are both likely to be Scott 179. Scott 181 is an extremely rare stamp. The PF database does not show a single certified 181 that is canceled. There are, however, numerous certificates of Scott 179s that were submitted as hopeful 181s. I would suggest that you visit the PF web site and compare valid 181s with your stamps.
Genuine 181s appear brighter/contrasty and very stark. Because this was a limited specially prepared run, the shading lines are very nearly all very separate and distinct. While there may be a very few early prints of #179 like that, the different papers will separate the two.
