Awhile ago I heard about this website called Comc where people could send in sports cards to their facility and buy and sell "listings" of cards to add the their collection and later can receive a shipment of cards you want physically, sort of like a consignment service. ***No Drive-By Links Please***
I was curious as to if anyone knew of a website like this but for stamps, I think I would be a cool addition to the hobby if there isn't one already.
If you'd like to add to your collection we have several great opportunities. One is called APS - they have a great stamp store and also circuits to which one can subscribe
I collect sports cards also and am familiar with COMC and think it is a very interesting business model.
IMHO the main difference between something like this for stamps and for cards, is that stamps require more expertise and more labor to correctly identify (perfs, shades, watermarks, measurements, paper type etc etc) and condition parameters are generally more nebulous and variable than cards--whereas for cards they are very easy to identify. Also common stamps are generally way less valuable than common cards, and less frequently traded as singles.
I think it could work for certain classes of stamps, maybe ones with retail value somewhere in the range of $1-$50 or so and for issues which don't have crazy perf varieties
I'll Happily swap my unwanted sportscards for low value stamps any day! Sign me up!
But maybe when you send the stamps into the hypothetical company you could list the stamps on the website but will be avalible for sell/trade when the contents are quickly confirmed or have a catalog number close by to ID to negate the high listing fees like COMC's.
