New Ebay (Australia) Payment System

Does anyone know if the changes ebay Australia is making to its payments system will affect sellers like me, who mainly sell through the US ebay site?

There's nothing on the US ebay site to suggest that the same sorts of changes are being made there.

As an aside, I am considering opening another bank account for the piddly sales I make on ebay (australia)

I do not wish for them to have access to my personal bank account

I agree and think that's a good idea.

I intend to confine my selling after June 18 to US ebay and perhaps also one of the European sites.

I agree that having a second bank account for online transactions is a good idea.
But I did not have an issue with giving PayPal (which at the time was owned and fully under the control of ebay) years ago so I did not mind giving it to them again; ebay had my bank info for 10-12 years and I saw no issues. <shrugs>

That's a fair opinion Don,
I too have my bank account with Paypal, no problems over 10 years or so.
The Boy Scout in me, resists giving out details to more and more people.
I get monthly reports from the Australian Govt on the millions lost
via scams, which are becoming more sophisticated weekly.

Isn't the new ebay system global? I think ebay uk is introducing Managed Payments on a similar timetable to ebay australia, and the US and some parts of mainland Europe already have it.

That's what I was wondering. If so, it's a massive undertaking, surely.

If it is an eBay/Australian bank account it will be included in the changes from what I believe.

Have changed both my bank accounts to new ones for our managed funds roll out.

One of the new bank accounts has had a lot of trouble. Beginning of the year the bank account was frozen for 7 weeks. An ebay glitch keeps changing my bank account number so it reads as a wrong number and can not process the funds from a sale. It is an issue at present and it is the 3rd time I have been locked out of my account because the number turned wrong again. This last time happened 2 weeks ago so no funds can get through to me at present again.

The new system is pretty well global. ebay (Canada) has already sent me the notification that my seller account has been suspended. That was because I too balked at sending my bank account information and, more importantly, authorizing them to take payments of whatever amount automatically from my account. No thank you. Paypal had my account number but it was only used by me to transfer funds in. They did request but never insisted on the authorized automatic withdrawal.

Somewhat sadly, this probably signals the end of my using ebay in any capacity. I have never sold much, maybe racking up 1000 or so items, mostly very small, since I joined in 1996, I think it was. Undoubtedly, I spent much more than I ever took in.

Maybe interesting to some that my recent purchases have entirely gone back to relying on by mail dealers and auction houses that mail out catalogues. These are mostly people that I dealt with back in the day and partially lost contact with. Some, though not all, are still in business. All "In Canada" businesses as parcel costs and delays from U.S. or European firms are very discouraging.

I guess I had a different type of eBay/PayPal account, they did automatic withdrawals for years with me in several situations;
- when they collected the ebay monthly fees and listing charges
- whenever I wanted to pay monthly bills like online subscriptions, scheduled donations, or website hosting fees
- if a buyer demanded a return
- if I purchased something
If they did not have access, then they would basically be loaning people money or billing and waiting/hoping people pay on time. (I cannot imagine the logistical nightmare of them freezing accounts when people did not pay their bill on-time.) I am not aware of any online service (for example, website hosting services) that operates on 'credit', they all demand that they have access to a payment account upfront.

Edit: I think that there is a legitimate complaint with them 'holding' the payments received for a few days; obviously a 'profit center' for them to generate huge amounts of interest on money which is not theirs.

With the amount of bank account changes for 2 ebay stores to do with managed funds. The 20/21 tax year is going to have to deal with 7 bank type accounts. Our book keeper is going to rub their hands together with their extra work load, that is if they do not get rid of me. 3 accounts have been used for more than one time frame in this tax year adding to the total confusion. On paper it is such a bad look.
