There is a lot of good information on this thread. A couple of takeaways from my experience:
1. Information is power. Know what you are buying. This forum and places like
https://stampsmarter.org/ are invaluable.
2.READ the
entire listing carefully. Sometimes an unscrupulous seller will put a "gotcha" in the fine print.
3. You will get burned occasionally. We all have! Don't get discouraged.
