The stamps issued by (or on behalf of) the Trucial States/"Sand Dunes States" have had a huge contribution to the popularization of stamp collecting, especially among the children, worldwide. You can criticize them all you want for being CTOs, or "wallpaper", or not connected in subject to the emirates that issued them, etc. Regardless of all the [tw]itching about them, they DID have a great contribution to sparking the appetite for learning, for general culture, before the Internet. Also, many are beatifully designed. I was thinking: why don't YOU, "serious" designers/postal administrations from most other countries, design stamps just as beautiful, huh? WHY? I like many of the stamps from the 7 emirates, even if they were designed by the associates of Finbar Kenny, or a few designed by Ion Dumitrana (Romania), etc. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunes_(stamps) |

I suspect that there is no evidence that the "stamps" produced for the Trucial States/Emirates made a "huge contribution" to popularising stamp collecting among children or to creating "an appetite for learning". Taste in stamp design will always be individual, but I rather prefer something that bears some relationship to the entity that is supposedly issuing the labels. |

There's probably no hard evidence ever been compiled - but that doesn't make it untrue. I collected as a kid and was greatly impressed by Um Al Qiwain's disappearing animals, Ajman and Manama soldiers and Beethoven sets, and several similar including the Yemen issues. They certainly contributed to my interest in the hobby and because they were ubiquitous, were great fodder for swapping with class mates. |

GeoffHa, I also prefer genuine relevance, but I saw overwhelming evidence about popularization. |
