Hello / Ciao. I think Scott has a lot of mistakes when he leaves the USA. Rome ceased to be a power long before the states of the Italic peninsula were established. This is an image from the Italian stamp forum with the denomination and its divisions. Regards. |

From the BIG BLUE 1840-1940 web blog https://bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/"The '41/'43/'47 edition Big Blue have, scattered through the album under the name of the various States, coverage for Modena (5 spaces), Parma (2 spaces), Romagna (3 spaces), Roman States (6 spaces), Sardinia (7 spaces), Tuscany (2 spaces), and Two Sicilies (6 spaces). The '69/'97 edition reduced the coverage to Roman States (Papal States), and Sardinia." My 1969 copyright Scott International PART 1 (BIG BLUE) has 6 spaces on the page immediately after Romania. The page has PONTA DELGADA at the top and ROMAN STAES in the middle and a 3rd country at the bottom. If you have a BIG BLUE check for a list of countries in the front or back of the album. Good luck. |

Ah more info from the BIG BLUE BLOG. "Roman States are found in all BB editions The Roman States spaces either admit the 1867 imperforate or 1868 perforate issue, but the perforate issues are much less expensive in every case. With the no gum varieties, only the blank space choice 3c black/gray is >$10.
The real problem is finding genuine copies among all the reprint forgeries! See discussion above.
The Roman States were retained in the '69 edition. In the '47 edition, Roman States is placed before Romania."
Keep looking! |

ok, so I looked again in the front of Part IV and it reads 1956-59. I guess I had looked at Part III ('49-'55) which has Italy (but no Roman States) when I posted in the beginning of the thread. Part IV contain the R's and I have Russia after Romania and Rio Muni before Romania. None of the volumes have indexes. Going to look more later. Tks |

Hello. I don't use them, but I don't care what Big Blue or Scott say; the Roman States have never existed. Take any map or any history book, it's the Papal States and Rome was the capital. Regards.

I prefer a more conciliatory approach, I personally prefer "Papal States" but use both without distress.
I find also "British Virgin Islands" an early irritation, and now use the broader term Virgin Islands.
...also early days in my collecting, El Salvador, and Salvador I now use the latter.

The Blue Internationals were and still are divided by era from the publisher. The whole world is in each original part. original--split parts---dates Part 1, (1A1/1A2/1B1/1B2) 1840-1940> ROMAN STATES ARE HERE< Part 2, (2A/2B) 1940-1949 Part 3, (3A/3B) 1949-1955 Part 4, (4A/4B) 1956-1959 and on and on for a bunch more. It sounds like Stamps4Life may have an older set of Internationals that were reworked with countries organized in alphabetical order with all eras together because he says the "R" countries are in Part IV. Remember, there are only 6 spaces for these stamps according to the Big Blue Blog, so the "Roman States" would still be with the country at the top of the page that they share. I would look at Rhodesia and see if the Roman States share the last page. Ponta Delgata would be my next place to look. |

Often collectors would juggle the pages for each new edition to place everything as close as possible to alphabetical order, so it's not unusual to find a several volume Scott International collection with A's in the first volume and Z's in the last, even though Scott issued them with date ranges for each album instead. |

Yvert & Tèlier 1996. The only thing that has changed is the appraisal, which is in French francs. |

Gibbons does - or used to - call them the "Roman States", which is bizarre as they're always, as far as I know, called the Papal States in other contexts! |
