The Khejuri Post Office was located on the Khejuri Is. (21.85751°N 87.911552°E) at the confluence of G#7869;okhali River and Khejuri River, near the mouth of Hugli River, now in East Medinipur district of Pashchimbanga state.
The post office was established in 1795 by CW Blunt, Postmaster General of B Presidency.
It was the key port for forwarding the outward and inward ship letters to and from Kolkata GPO.
The incoming ship letters for Kolkata from England were cleared at Khejuri as due to the presence of river sandbeds, most of the larger mail ships did not go upto Kolkata. Mails were then brought to Kolkata by sloops from Khejuri.
Later After Packet service was actively used at Khejuri.
(Early ship letters with Khejuri handstruck postmarks are very expensive.)
The second telegraph line of communication in India after the Kolkata–Diamond Harbor line, was constructed between Khejuri and Kukrahati in 1851.
The ruins are of the Khejuri Post and Telegraph Office, the first Combined P&T Office in India.
It was built in 1853 at the cost of #8377;15000 by the H Division of the Military Board.
Unfortunately, the building got severely damaged by a severe cyclone on October 5,1864 as a result of which it was abandoned and the building is now haunted.
