I found this letter and 2 others in a 1866 cover from Hong Kong/Canton. The letters appear to be correspondence from 2 sisters in China to their father Andrew Haraden in Salem Ma. The 2nd and 3rd page of the letter describe some sort of violence in the harbor and is an interesting read.

Nice. I always like it when contents turn up in a cover. Often they are in a language I don't understand but they really bring things to life if I can understand them.

What do I think? I think they created the happy face emoji on page 4.

The HSBC was founded on 3/3/1865 at Hong Kong. After a financial crash in 1866 the Chinese began to assist in administration. In these days it was the clearing of pirates from the Pearl Estuary and the South China Sea that was a necessary first step to opening the port.

The so-described "smile" is the closing parenthesis of a parenthetical phrase, one of many in the letter.

2 points ...

1. The letter date does not match the envelope date close enough to pair-up. Perhaps one of the other letters does?

2. Very nice to see a preprinted address this early!

The other 2 letters are dated Nov 24th 1866 and Nov30th 1866 so these were probably mailed together and the letter shown above was either included or added to the envelope for storage at some point later on?
