Cover with script "Way 26" written on it: What does it mean? I have it on a Mobile, AL cover to Peace Dale, RI dated Dec 4, 1843.

I think that the "WAY" postmark indicates that it was carried aboard a ship.

"Way 26" means it was received by a post office mail carrier on his route to the Mobile post office. He received 1c for his trouble and the 1c was added to the 25c rate to Rhode Island. Most likely the letter was received from a steamboat.

I am trying to paste a photo of the cover. It is a bank draft for $450. The writer says he talked to the ship captain who was anxious to sail and agreed to carry the cover out of New Orleans on Dec 1. Cover sent from Mobile on Dec 4. So I assume the "Way 26" is some rate for the method of carrying.

Should have mentioned: My daughter lives a mile from Peace Dale RI. It is a small town in southern RI. I am not a sailing ship collector!
