Ribbed Papers

Hi,

Resurrecting this old thread for a question. I had been asking around about this Canada stamp which appears to be printed on Ribbed Paper. An expert told me that there is a rare case where the stamp was printed on the USA Ribbed Paper used on stamps from this thread. It apparently was the same paper.

Does this look like the Ribbed Paper from this thread. It looks similar to me but maybe a trained eye could give a better opinion.

Yes, this would be useful to see if has an appearance as laid paper, but for the ribbed paper, also a photo under low oblique light would be useful (see my image in this thread a bit earlier).

It would be nice to see the front of the stamp. The images provided show that it is highly unlikely to be like the ribbed papers of the Continental bank notes. I suspect that images with a backlight would show a paper texture similar that of soft paper stamps of the bank note period.

On the heels of cfrphoto's post I'm resurrecting this thread to ask a related question pertaining to Palestine Mandate stamps:

a certain stamp series (the pictorials) was partially produced on what the catalogues call "vertically ribbed paper" and also "thin semi-transparent vertically ribbed paper". These are generally considered 2 different paper types - but I'm wondering if this may be the same type of paper in both cases.

From what I've read the ribbing process (done in the UK along with the stamp production) was accomplished by a machine during the drying process after the paper had been gummed:

If the ribbing on the thin paper is light and not very pronounced like on the regular thicker paper issue, is it possible that this is the reason why one version is on thinner paper and another on thicker paper - that the paper thickness is the result of how pronounced the ribbing is, how bunched up the paper has become, and not actually a different type of paper?

As I read cfrphoto's post above a similar thought ran through my head: a horizontally ribbed stamp may be shorter than a vertically ribbed stamp purely because of the tension in the paper pulling it in and making it shrink (and not because of a different type of paper being used)? And likewise a vertically ribbed stamp may be narrower because of the paper being pulled from the horizontal axes?

I'm no expert, but I think there may be some confusion here between ribbed paper and ribbed gum. From what I've read (e.g., in Williams, Fundamentals of Philately), they're quite different things.

Also, if someone could post a scan of ribbed paper, I'd be grateful.

Ribbed paper typically doesn't show up easily on a scan. It's most visible with light shining obliquely to the surface, in order to create shadows from the ribbing. When viewed in a scan or in fluid the paper tends to look normal rather than striped like laid paper.

Thanks, billsey. That also helps clarify the difference between ribbed and laid paper, inasmuch as the processes for identifying them are very different as well. Ribbed gum, on the other hand, seems another matter entirely.

Yes, ribbed gum or gum with gum breakers, is used to help keep the stamps from curling and really has nothing to do with the paper itself.
