R36 - Line At Top Of Stamp.

Going through the slow process of moving stamps from old album pages, stock books/pages and glassiness into my new pages and examining each as I move them. Been finding a few variants that I didn't realize that I had.

At first I thought this was a double transfer at the top of R36. But the line continues off the stamp to the right and left.

Is this the top row of stamps in the press sheet?

It looks like it was printed from worn or re-engreved plates. Notice how the letters U and E are joined at the top in the word revenue.

It's a guideline for the position which was not burnished out. They show up on various first issues with some regularity.

Indeed. Platers seek them out, but I don't know that collectors of revenue plate varieties consider them collectible in and of themselves. Personally, I don't pay them much heed unless they are bold enough to simulate a doubled frame line (which they are not), in which case they make for an interesting aesthetic presentation.

Thank you all for the insight. I guess I hadn't noticed this before. Made a notation in my album and added it. Since then I've gone through and found a couple with barely a hint of this that can only been seen under high magnification.
