I was reading about subterranean termites tonight and their affinity toward wood products is worrying. I know they are relatively invisible (living in walls/attics/underground), but what is the probability of termites finding their way into a wooden chest of drawers in a bedroom?
My stamps sheets are either in USPS glassine envelopes, heavyweight sheet protectors, or for newer issues, still sealed with USPS cardboard backing.
Would it be beneficial to place these items in a large 2.5 gallon Hefty plastic storage bag for added protection or a Sterilite plastic storage box? Would either of those cause any damage to already protected stamps?
Subterranean termites are just that...they nest in the ground. They tunnel through wood bridging inedible areas with mud tunnels that they keep moist. They would have to eat through a wood source all the way to your stamps which you would notice long before they arrived. All treatment to eradicate would be soil applied to destroy the nest. The least of your worries should be termites unless the books are stored on either bare ground or in wood on bare ground. Regards m
