I read the cancel on this Egyptian stamp as being "HAI EL ARAB".
Haven't found an Egyptian Hai el Arab in my sources, but they indicate one in Sudan. Could this Egyptian stamp have been posted from what was then the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan?
My thanks in advance for any help on this. Happy New Year!

I don't see why it couldn't have been Hai el Arab (a neighborhood in Khartoum, Sudan), since Fuad I (pictured on the stamp) was formally "Sultan of Egypt and Sudan," and as you said, being Anglo-anything meant it was ultimately up to the British to decide what as permissible or not.

Thank you, both! And I'm particularly happy to see that cancel telling me that there was also a Hai el Arab in Egypt!

Hai El Arab in Khartoum province, Sudan, opened as a postal agency in 1957.

The Egyptian example illustrated is dated 1928.

The Sudanese office had a distinctly different type of canceller.

Thank you, Plateflaw! Your info makes it certain that the stamp I have was canceled in Egypt.
