This is postally used. The private security marks, either handstamped or just pen marks, are found on Victorian British Asia stamps. It was done before handing mail to a messenger to take to the post office to prevent theft of the stamps by the messenger. No nearby mail boxes back then.
"In the far East it was the practice of commerical companies to have their name stamped on all their out going mail . This voided thief and messengers who took mail to the Post Office from stealing the stamps ."

Thank you Floortrader. Yes, I understand. Also did additional reading tonight and the site that Hans provided was very helpful. Some of the older Hong Kong stamps that I acquired are still in route - this information will be helpful when I get my tongs on them. Appreciate it.
