I have a question about identifying the "Majestic Forest of Canada" stamps (Scott 1283 - 1286)

In the picture below, you see the standard four stamps and the # 1283a that was issued as a Miniature Souvenir Pane of 4. The question is how do you tell the difference when you have single stamps?

They have different catalog value, but they both have the same perforation and the same tagging, I know that the printers were different, but I can't tell or see the difference.

Thanks,

nialiat,

The regular pane stamps were printed on Harrison paper while the miniature panes were on Peterborough paper.

Unitrade describes the papers as:

Harrison: mint - blue-green tinged gum, paper curls; used - back of stamps has horizontal "lines" when viewed against a darker background
Peterborough: mint - greyish, very shiny gum; used - paper is very smooth, white, crispy

Hope that helps.

Peter

Hello Peter,

Thanks for the reply, I have the 2021 Unitrade Catalog and did not see that description for the paper. It helps a lot

Thanks again!

There should be a description on or near page 26 in your Unitrade of many of the papers used on Canadian stamps. Fluorescence is on page 25, also a factor in a number of stamp issues (though not for this one).
