I'm curious if anyone collects revenues that have historical handwritten cancellation dates on them such as Lincoln death on April 15, 1865, Fort Sumter bombarded on April 12, 1861, Titanic sinks on April 14-15, 1912, etc.

Many people have collected and created calendars using revenues, which is a difficult enough proposition, since some dates are very hard to find. To look for very specific dates is a time consuming way to collect.

Philately815,

Easy answer is yes!

As an example of what revcollector mentioned, I am a calendar collector in that I have calendar pages from 1862 - 1902 and look to find a canx date for each day in that period.

Here in Albuquerque we have at least a few collectors that have specific Civil War dates they look for revenue stamps with those dates. They write up the event (battle, assassination, etc.), and show a canceled stamp for that date.

I started as a cheap way to occupy myself at shows when I couldn't find other things for my collections. I call them distractor collections (and I have several), but my calendar collections were started in 1996 and I am still searching!

Most calendar collectors look to upgrade manuscript canx to better canx when they find them. A nice SOTN canx looks better than chicken scratch

Here is an example of a page (Jan, 1867):

Time is what makes is fun and interesting. Our kids are long gone, I'm nearing retirement so I'm lucky enough to have plenty of time to do research. Earlier today I did some digging on Hipstamp and found a revenue with a hand cancel with the date when General Lee met with his staff to view and assess Union troop build-up and movement just prior to the Battle of the Wilderness. Not exactly an earth-shattering find but being a history buff if I found two examples of the same stamp I'd rather have the one with a date of some type of historical relevance, unless, of course, the other example was a significantly better grade. Better yet, might as well get both!

I have a bunch of old U.S. revenues on which I think I can read the handwritten dates. Willing to look among them for any dates anyone may ask me about. I'm looking for ordinary U.S. postage on which I can read the small-town places cancels.
