Rpo Collection. Do People Still Collect?

Newbie here w/inherited. Looks like my grandfather went to great length to collect as many RPO's cancellations as possible. Probably 200 different covers maybe more. Mostly northeastern routes, mostly 1920's and 30's. Is there any interest in these anymore? I know first day covers are more widely collected. Is this even the forum that would discuss this?

The Mobile Post Office Society (MPOS) is active. Although the website is aged (https://www.eskimo.com/~rkunz/mposhome.html ) , their hard copy publication "Transit Postmark Collector" is quite informative and is full of article regarding RPO cancels and postal history.

Just went to the sight. Perfect for what I'm looking for. At least all of these covers are in similar shape and put into albums as soon as they came back to the Narbeth P.O. I'm assuming some routes may be more valuable than others for various reasons. Just want them to get to someone that will appreciate them. Thanks for answering. JoJo

As noted above, the MPOS thinks so.

As with most subjects of great span, there are areas of greater and lesser interest. Folks may collect just one railroad, one region, one time period within same. Examples can be RPO cancels applied on board ships (that is 'a thing'), RPO cancels from only rail riding street cars or the rail riding street cars of just one city, a single mail car as it was transferred from one railway to another, RPO service associated with a particular city/time such as the Comstock period of Virginia City, NV (V&T RR), or a National Park such as the YVRR which served Yosemite National Park from 1907 into 1945.

Yes, as the others have said there are collectors for most everything in postal history, including RPOs. It sounds like your grandfather has made a nice starter collection and I hope that you will organize it and build on it so you will have that link to him. The good news is that RPO covers of this vintage are inexpensive, unless there is something very unusual about them. RPO covers of this vintage tend to sell in the 50 cents to $1 each when sold individually, or a bit less when sold in lots so you can build your collection at a very modest cost. If you decide to expand and go back into the earlier days of RPOs in the early 1900s and especially in the 1800s the prices go up for those, but many those are still very affordable. My suggestion is to go on ebay and go to the Postal History category (it is in the STAMPS general category) and search "RPO covers" to get a general idea. Also, this can help you decide how to narrow down your RPO collecting interest since the field is very broad.
