Hi

I have inherited a stamp collection that is quite large. I know there are some valuable stamps in the collection. It is primarily Australian but there are many stamps from Commonwealth countries.

What is the best way to go about this, auction, dealer, collection fair?

Thanks for you time.

Any answer will be dependent upon what is in the collection and how it was formed. You have offered us nothing to work with.

Since you know there are valuable stamps, please post clear images, preferably scanned and not from your phone, of the top ten stamps which you think are valuable, and tell us why. Once we have some insight as to the scope of the collection, we can make some intelligent suggestions.

I concur with mm1942, posting some representative images will best allow folks to form opinions on disposition.

I've seen some of the invoices that were paid to acquire some of the stamps. several thousand AUS$. Also with google search, a number of the stamps come up as being $100-$300 in value. I will also post a couple of pictures

Based on the current market, and the limited look at two pages, I would say auction would be the way to go.

Googling prices is only of limited help. These are very nice stamps from the the front, but the backs with hinging or not make all difference. Plus Google values are usually going to give you retail or asking prices and you're not going to get that.

From the two photos provided it looks like a nice clean lot.

Ace may be favourable due to location, but do your due diligence.

Have a talk with Phoenix auctions in Melbourne also.

The majority of inherited stamp collections do not guarantee rare stamps, as tens of millions of side-face KGV stamps were made and an unending list of varieties exist.
The KGV stamps posted are not scarce or rare. It would be interesting to know if any KGVI stamps are part of the Australian collection.

I'm guessing the 4½ violet die2 is actually a die1.

Mint die2 are rare & expensive .

I'm curious to see any material from the other Commonwealth countries.

Google is never a friend for stamp values, particularly so if you're not a collector.

Thanks everyone.
That gives me some starting places. I can see that some of the stamps have been acquired from Ace Stamp Auctions.
Looks like one of the better stamps is an Australia 1931 Kangaroo 2 Pounds Grey & Rose-Crimson. It appears to be without a postage stamp and has all the perforations.

...and this one
If we can read the writing, we may be able to offer a value.

Looks like plate 2, punched in the Jubilee line.

If the Australia collection has a mint £2 'roo it ought to have a 5/- bridge, the arms set and the navigators, let alone other high face value 'roos.

We're only too happy to help but some more photos would greatly assist.
