I believe this type of machine was phased out prior to 2010. Replaced by the APC/SSK machines now in many post office lobbies.

"The vending machine windows only showed the stamp on offer, the quantity and total $, so I was hoping to get MDI booklets but got none. The glassine packs seemed to be what was on offer in the San Francisco Bay Area in post office vending machines. Were these used in certain regions only?

hb - They were not restricted to any particular regions, but whether a particular PO machine had any depended on whether the local person in charge of the machines ordered supplies of them or not. I know Fremont in the east Bay carried such packets.

The glassine packs were also MDI products. Makes sense.
