This is the stamp in question:

What is the identifier of this in the Scott catalogue? On the back, number 18 is written on it with pencil, but that is not according to the Scott numbering, I guess.

I had a similar query last year,
mine I have under "Belgian Congo" in my database.
with "Congo Independent State" as a searchable text string.

A bit confused, so not 1901 issue but 1894? That would be logical though, because the stamp has 18 written on its back, I guess that is the Stampworld or Michel catalogue number.

If I'm seeing the colour right, yours is SG27, black and mauve, in my old Gibbons Europe catalogue. The same design was used in 1900 (black and claret) (SG40) and 1901 (black and carmine) (SG41). Sorry - I don't have my Belgian catalogue to hand.

sonoso, in Scott world, the series started in 1894, but different colorways appeared over the next several years. Your design can be found in lilac and black, and then, in 1901, carmine and black (as the main numbers).

It's a great design...no doubt my favorite among BC stamps. I dropped this one in about 12 years ago, so it's "free" to reshare:

This is the next page - unfortunately with lots of gaps - showing the 1900-01 issues, including the 1 Fr.

Thanks, boss. A while since I did these - haven't really tried to fill the gaps. I'm not that keen on picking up individual stamps - like a nice albumful to play with!
