From page 62 of Vol III of The Postage Stamps of New Zealand.

Slightly distorted from being photographed but the rhomboid figure in the middle measures 20.5mm in the horizontal and 18mm in the vertical. The outside measures 22mm in the horizontal and 21mm in the vertical.

Nice work Bobby!

Sheesh ! Never occurred to me to look there
and I have that tome.
Another example of the wisdom of a group.

Excellent!

Thank you 64idgaf and everyone who contributed to the thread, especially Bobby De La Rue for steering us back towards New Zealand after our trip into the northern hemisphere and ultimately Rod222 who nailed 'The Port' for us.

The numeral font looks different but perhaps sketched without reference to an example? It certainly seemed hard to find - I wonder if there has been any work published on the rarity of the New Zealand barred numerals.

From The Postage Stamps of New Zealand:
There were 41 numbers issued to the Nelson District Offices, numbers 3 and 21 not being shown on the list and there is duplication of numbers 2, 5, 8, 10 and 22.

In addition to the N over 1 cancellation used at the Nelson Chief Post Office, obliterators with N over a number were used at:

  • Richmond - N over 2

  • Hope - N over 4

  • Charleston (later transferred to the Westport District) - N over 5

  • Waimea West - N over 8

  • Motueka - N over 14

  • The Port - N over 28

Great stuff fairdinkumstamps

If you have White's book on NSW, you'll see on page 331 that the date of the reduction of letter postage to New Zealand to 2d is unknown.

I found this article on Trove years ago that helps in this area:
