Hi all,

Recently I acquired the cover shown below, posted in 1873 from Bathurst to Sydney.

Sawyer was an undertaker. The envelope was pinned to something in its time. One of the pin holes can be clearly seen at the bottom left of the front image.

What interests me is this handstamp, dated almost a year after posting.

I was looking through the National Archives papers I have saved and found a very similar marking on a document that was in the Katoomba Post Office files.

The full document is below.

Has anyone seen this marking before?

My best guess is it's a handstamp from the legal department of the NSW GPO.

I would tend to agree Bobby,
not seen before.
Just as an aside, I checked my "Frank and Free" Catalogue (Karman)
There was no similar impressions from 1829.
I have WA, Van Dieman's Land and Victoria

All frank and free employ the Coat of Arms not the crown.
(Nice research)
Oops. Just seen 1839 using the crown

Maybe (In the corner) "Noted by ????"
is handstruck after insertion in some sort of register.

Bobby De La Rue, there are a couple of nice examples on this revenue catalogue page if you scroll down to 1865 Queen Victoria:

Thanks Rod

I heard back from Dave Elsmore.

He advised that it is a Treasury cancel.

He also said that the example on the 1873 cover was probably applied "as a receiving cancel on a probate issue awaiting final clearance".
