'punch Outs' In Selvedge Of Some French Stamps

Anyone know the purpose of (if any) these punched out shapes found in the selvedge of some French stamps?

So that they could be stored in some sort of lever file
that accepted that punch.
That's what I have always thought.


To clarify, the file / folder at point of sale, where the sheets of stamps were held pending sale.

My guess would be a mark showing that they were the products of the imprimerie. They were a characteristic feature of the epreuves de luxe that were produced in limited numbers.
