Rod,

That's a revenue from the Grand Duchy of Hesse (Grossherzogtum Hessen), one the the German States. Note that the German word for Duchy is "Herzogtum", but it's spelled "herzogthum" on the stamp. Not sure why, would need to ask a native speaker.

My copies of Erler are packed as the moment as I'm in the middle of my biennial move, so I'll make a note to get you a scan of the catalog excerpt once my stuff arrives in 3-4 weeks.

Thank you very much Postmaster.
that's very generous of you, in your own time,
I don't envy you (or anyone) moving, very stressful. Good Luck.

I don't envy you either with German political history, spins my mind.
I see the only remaining Grand Duchy is Luxembourg.

German spelling was not really standardized until the late 1800's. And those states that had used non-standard spellings in official titles probably continued to do so even afterwards. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germa..._orthography.

BTW, regarding rod222's revenue, the old Forbin revenue catalog lists a stamp of this design and color issued 1876-1878,but perf 12.5 rather than 11.5.

Yes, "Herzogthum" is not an error, see here other examples as well:
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deuts..._Jahrhundert

By the way the "Grossherzogthum" is made out of two different "s" which together developed to "ß", as you can see the two "s" look already similar like this :). So today you write it like this correctly: Großherzogtum.

Love those, Rod. If I could collect only one area, it would be the German Colonies. When I get my books back, I'll check your cancels. I don't think those are particularly rare, but it never hurts to check.
