Rod,

Michel catalogs the DDR officials in five categories, A-E. This is from D, officials for use on confidential mail. Based on the color, probably D2 (black on light lilac pink). D1 is similar, but brownish red.

I'm still looking into the purple official cancel.

Hi Postmaster,
thank you very much indeed.
Alas, I slept through the auction, (tough day exercising)
My example sold overnight for $38

I had an inkling it was a goodie, but without knowledge, I would have been bidding blind.
Appreciate your time.
The example shown here was, I think Sandfayre with a reserve of $380 if memory serves.

I attempted to look this up with the British P. database, with year of the penny red, however could not find exactly where the one letter, "W" was from in the code.

Mutilated package ephemera / indicia.
Germany : Langballig.
Any assistance welcomed.

Presume Etiquette is registration, but why Pink? why "V" ?

"AskPhil" results for "V"

V:
1: label used in Iceland to indicate letter or parcels with a declared value.
2: Flat plate imperf. coil; Scott Catalogue suffix to identify stamps other than standard postage; also called "H."
3: registration label.
4: in corners of triangular Czechoslovakia personal delivery stamp.
5: Valencia (Spain), Venezia (Venice, Italy); Vicenza (Italy) pre-adhesive postmark.
6: Vatu; currency unit in Vanuatu.
7: V, VV, VVV: symbols used in indicate degree of value.
8: Victory in WW II on stamps of Belgium.
9: Colombia-Scadta consular overprint for Venezuela.
10:. Volunteers, South Australia official overprint, 1868-74.
11: overprint on stamps of Norway for successful invasion of country by the Germans, 1941.
12: prefix letter used by Avery Dennison in front of plate number.

Further information from "AskPhil" (May or may not be, relevant)

Entries checke"ADC" or "Reg. br:" stand ford against 'experts' on stampboards and added / amended: Green Bold.
Area Distribution Center (ADC): mail processing facility that receives, processes and distributes mail destined for specific ZIP Code area, USPS term.

Rod, I believe AskPhil's explanation #1 is correct. I have several of these West German covers somewhere in my cover boxes. Here is one from a binder Deutsche Post (late East German) covers. The DDR value labels are on a thin dark red paper. My West German labels are like yours.

Langballig is in northern Schleswig, Germany. It must be very small. I don't remember ever having seen a Langballig cancel.

Don't recognize the green label.

Rod,

Been doing some research. The "V" label inidicates it's insured up to a declared value -- derived from the French "Valeur déclarée" as used by the UPU. I've seen these in a couple colors, but the pinks seem to date from the early-mid 1990s.

Thank you very much, gentlemen.
Well solved.

(Not to be confused with the earlier query on East Germany, the Pinkish "VD" label, that was for confidential mail)

Here are several more value declaration labels from West Germany. The pink one is from 11.11.80, and the bright red one is from 5.11.71. It appears that a requirement was to post the value of the contents (and the letter weight?) near the label.
