Here is a commemorative postcard and cancel from 1921. Inscription on address side of card says, "Official postcard of the Wartburg city of Eisenach for the Luther memorial celebration of May 4-5, 1921." Picture side of card is typographically printed with inscription, "original drawing by Joseph Sattler, Munich." Julius Bochmann's Katalog der Deutschen Sonderstempel says this about the listed Eisenach #1 cancellations, "Picture: Chest image of Dr. Martin Luther in the circle, local stamps and text stamps were also used individually or together as hand stamps!" |

Here are two special cancellations which show Gotha, Thuringia's strong ties to the insurance industry in Germany. First cancel is on postal card Michel #P248 dated April 26, 1933. Inscription on cancel says "The city of insurance banks". Bochmann's catalog lists this hand cancel as Gotha #4. It was used from 1931-6. Second cancel is from the Soviet Zone of occupation and is dated August 1, 1948. Inscription on this cancel reads, ""Insurance coverage, state insurance company". From komoot.com, "Gotha was the cradle of modern insurance. The Insurance Museum reminds us of this with historical documents, photos and fire insurance signs. Most of all, Ernst-Wilhelm Arnoldi (1778-1841), born in Gotha, is honored. He is considered "father of the German insurance industry". The Gotha merchant's son professionalized the insurance industry in the 19th century...The magnificent building at Bahnhofstrasse 3A was once the seat of the Gotha Life Insurance Bank." |

Rod, your cartoon reminded me of riding through the North Carolina countryside long ago with my dad in his '51 Plymouth. We came upon a country store at a crossroads. There was a big sign "You are now entering Shotwell". On the other side of store was an equally large sign "You are now leaving Shotwell". Here is a November 3, 1931 cash on delivery cover from the chief of police of Bielefeld, Germany to an addressee in Frankfurt a/M. Cover is franked with a 1927-30 official series 20 pf value and a 1928 definitive series 15 pf value POL Perfin of Bielefeld. Bielefeld machine cancel left a clear impression. |
