Here is a philatelic cover bearing the special cancel of Wuerttemberg's Constitution Day. These special cancels were made for other cities besides the Cannstadt one on the cover. They were all used for only one day, September 25, 1919. From wikipedia, "The Kingdom of Wuerttemberg functioned as a constitutional monarchy within the German Empire, with four votes in the Federal Council and 17 in the Imperial Diet. The constitution rested on a law of 1819, amended in 1868, 1874, and 1906. The king received a civil list (annual grant) equivalent to 103,227 pounds sterling in the early 20th century...King William abdicated on 30 November 1918, following Germany's defeat in the First World War, ending a dynasty that had lasted 837 years." |

Nice, thanks Jill. Dashed if I could find it. Private Post 1888 Essen 05mk MiNo30 Page 83 Lionels Rampant, with split tails. 1572 "Here the Lyon his tayle is forked. For by the taile his boldenesse, and harte is knowne, as the horse is knowen by the eares. For when the Lyon is wrothe, first he beateth the earthe with hys tayle, and afterwarde as the wrathe increaseth, he smiteth, and beateth his own backe." The lion rampant with forked tail is a traditional emblem of Bohemia, now the Czech Republic, first evidenced on the seal of King Vladislaus II of Bohemia granted by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in the mid to late 13th century. |

@Rod,
Three posts earlier first page, top left: BERLINER PAKETFAHRT ACTIEN-GESELLSCHAFT.
An "Aktiengesellschaft" (modern spelling with "k") is a limited company that issued stocks (Aktien). If you look at the German DAX listing, you will see most have A.G. in their names. Since 1892, they also can be G.m.b.H. (Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung), but those are not publicly listed. |

And, here is an older special cancellation. This one is for the 11th German National Shooting Competition in Mainz. Julius Bochmann's Katalog der Deutschen Sonderstempel lists it as Mainz #1, and it was used from the 17th to the 24th of September 1894. So, this is a "last day of the event" cancel. The special 'Deutsche Reichspost' postcard was sent to Hrn. Selezky at Kalaschnikoff Pristan 30 in St. Petersburg, Russia. A green St Petersburg receiving cancel is on the lower left on the address side of the card. Front of the card shows a trophy being raised by a participant and a banquet hall. Card is signed by a number of people, possibly participants. Close-up pic of my favorite signature is shown. |

Rod, I think you are probably correct. There may be some meaning or symbol of the image connected to the "af/av" ending/sound that is lost on outsiders...the tail of the figure certainly has the shape of a fancy "f". |

Agree. Looks like a monkey: "Affe" in German. Maybe a play on the name Gust-Affe for Gustaf. |
