This is an Armed Forces Air Letter from a George Sullivan serving at Goose Bay in April 1945.

In the return address his unit appears to be K.O.C. but I have not been able to find any army unit with those initials. Does anyone know what they stand for?

My guess is Knights of Columbus,an organization that provided morale services to the Canadian military during World War II.

I did wonder about the Calgary regiment but they served in the UK / Europe and I did not find any reference to them being part of W Force.

I do like the idea of the Knights of Columbus. I assume in that case George would have been a civilian ? otherwise I thought he would have given his army unit. I had not thought of that possibility.

It will be interesting to see if any more ideas turn up.

Thank you for sharing. If you have the cover itself (stamp or postmark/cancel), then please share that image.

I don't know about KOC but here is some additional information.

As you probably know, CAPO is an abbreviation for Canadian Army Post Office. There were 8 types of Canadian War cancels used around Newfoundland from about Sept 1, 1941 until July of 1946.

These were primarily in Newfoundland, Lab or adjacent areas of Canada. Remember Newfoundland was a separate country then and had their own postage. There may have been CAPOs in other parts of Canada. In Newfoundland, according to the NSSC:

CAPO 1 - St Johns
CAPO 2 - Gander
CAPO 3 -Botwood
CAPO 4 - RCAF Gander
CAPO 5 - Torbay
CAPO 10 - Goose Bay. The one you shared is from here. Postmarks exist from Goose Bay from July 2, 1942 to April 1, 1946. If you have the cancel date and its outside these dates, then it would be valuable and likely rare. Unlikely though.

There were also related Armed Forces cancels (Not CAPOs but similar):
Avalon F.M.O.
Avalon F.M.O. #2

I'm lucky to have an exemplar of each. Here is one to share. Note that the postal cancel has CAPO #1 in it.

Thanks for the info I am familiar with the set up of W Force in Newfoundland and Labrador. With a bit of processing in Photoshop the date of the CAPO 5 postmark is clearly 1945 as confirmed by the date of the letter 01/04/1945 when the war was just about over..

This is the front on the letter sheet. The letter is from one brother to another serving in the RCAF. The message is congratulations on receiving the DFC and wondering when he will get back to Canada from the UK,

Re the other Avalon cancellations I assume you have the triangular ones which come in several types.

As you suggest there were other CAPSs used some very rare. Although many Canadian units used the British style F.P.O. date stamps especially the RCAF bomber squadrons in No. 6 group in the UK.
