As the only waterway between the Black Sea in the east and the Mediterranean Sea
in the west, the Dardanelles has been a much-contested area over the years,
especially from the beginning of World War I 1914/18........



The Western side of the Dardanelle straits goes by the name of the Gallipoli peninsula
where many thousands of troops from both sides lost their lives during the first world war.
