Imperforate Modern Sheets

I have noticed that imperforate modern sheets command a 3x to 4x of face value premium.

In the future, do you think they will command the same, less, or more of a premium?

Are there certain modern stamp oddities (recalls, errors, color shifts, etc) that will always be desirable?

If you are talking about NDC self-adhesive sheets IMO they will at least retain their premium value due to the relatively small issue quantities of 3-5 thousand. Personally, I do not see them ever going crazy price wise due to the fact that they are sheets and not album space singles. If a great number of sheets were broken up that might change but what would be the point of breaking up a NDC sheet? In addition, the sheets were not accidently created and found their way into the USPS stamp stock. They were designed and sold to be exactly what they are, and purchasers could purchase them. No mystery to it all. A small demand and a small supply equal static pricing.

For US Issues

Oddities of rarity such as the non-inverted bi-plane. No mistake but so few printed. Same with the perf 12 JPJ 1784b can be had now for under $4000.00 $3500.00, had sold higher but will remain in demand. Should the unique plate block be broken into singles, that would alter the supply side for singles.

Recalls, well that one's price has drifted down.

Errors, the so called major errors (color missing, wrong color, inverts, perforation missing) will stay in demand but it may take years to see the quantity available be truly determined. But remember some true errors still have little value to begin with such as things missing you can regularly see or carries little interest such as missing gum errors on gummed issues.

The above two can be value driven by the inclusion or exclusion of the variety in a standard US stamp album.

Color Shifts, no. Once found, they tend to stay at that price level forever and is subject to later finds for years.

Interest in Errors, freaks and oddities does vary over time, thus the price will fluctuate based upon the interest and related demand.

rogdcam: I was thinking about the imperforate Looney Tunes stamp sheets. Not sure if those were created accidentally or with authorization. However, there does seem to be a recent craze for NDC released sheets, especially press sheets for issues in the last two years. Many years from now, is the average collector going pay a premium for the NDC release of the Sun Science issue for example, vs the regular one?

Torin - The Looney Tunes NDC had an issue quantity, 118,000 sheets, far exceeding most other NDC issues and is not at all rare or even scarce for that matter. Much like dollar value Colombians the subject matter and cachet are what keeps it in demand. IMO you will never see it or others like it appreciate in value. It's price history over the years has been static.

As with all of this it is supply and demand. There are so many WW issues that are truly rare having been issued in single digit quantities and they go begging for buyers and are assigned mythical baseless catalog values perhaps based upon one sale or a dealers dreamy asking price.

I just never see the words "stamps" and "investment" in the same planetary system.

Torin - the NDC Looney Tunes are unlikely to keep up with inflation and the NDC press sheets are likely to do worse.

Because many collectors only want a single. or pair or PN or pane rather than a full sheet. Not only are smaller pieces far less expensive, they are far easier to store.

A year or so back (and farther), the USPS only sold a fixed, small amount of NDC sheets and when they were gone, they were gone - and they were often gone within minutes. Recent NDC sheets seem to be available on an ongoing basis, with some NDC sheets still being available today nearly a year after first day of issue. The older sheets that sold out quickly may possibly hold or increase their value (or not), but current NDC issues probably won't carry that much of a premium due to their wider availability.

I've purchased several NDC sheets in recent months to use as postage. Postally used copies and those on cover are likely to be far scarcer than mint examples.

TheArtfulHniger - How were you able to use the imperforate stamps without the USPS considering them invalid --- it does say on the site these are not intended for postage. But then again, many postal clerks may not even have the time to notice. And if you have a few still hanging around, please send me a card with one of them as I think you are correct, having an imperforate stamp be successfully used will be scarce.

I don't get these as they are much like the No Intended For Circulation coins except worse in some ways as it is very unclear if the imperfs at least can be legally used. Plus much harder to store and use than most NIFC coin (well unless you are fool enough to use an American Silver Eagle dollar coin to make a dollar purchase!)..

Chris s, the imperforate stamps are valid for use.
I know of at least one stamp club that is using them on their monthly news letter and has been doing so ever since the first sheets were available

I personally have used several of the modern imperfs as postage. I still have a few (very few) in my postage pile to be used in the future.

In the future, the real premium will be for singles used on cover during the months after they were issued. For example, how many US 5620 Raven Story imperf NDC singles are on cover postmarked around the time it came out? Or the Harry Potter stamps?

There were not many NDC stamps used, and most will turn out to be CTO's.

Just make certain that the margins on singles are adequate.

Kinda sucks for those true 'escapes' of accidentally imperf sheets/panes. True imperfs, from before the USPS distributed purpose-made imperfs, are worth significantly more than the purpose-made ones. Now, even a true accident is not going to have that great premium.
