Have a US 10c Jefferson stamp identified as Scott #139 by previous owner. The stamp is imperf on the right side and bottom, No mention of imperfs in any of my catalogs. Any help opinions will be very much appreciated.

An imperforated stamp has to have four straight sides. This stamp looks like it has been scissor cut to me - the sides are not straight

Easy test - Scott 209 has 4 vertical lines to left of the oval around bust, all others have 5 lines. Scott 139 should also have a grill. |

Ah, okay, thanks, especially when considering its low, low catalogue-value.

Besides the 4 vertical lines to the left of the oval (rather than the usual 5) mentioned in an earlier post, Scott 209 is of a rather darker heavier brown than all of the earlier 10-cent Jeffersons. The dark brown color is usually sufficient to identify it. Added: To clarify the above, I am referring to the brown shading lines outside the oval. The shading inside the oval is usually dark on all ... but the shading outside the oval is usually rather light except for 209. |

There are two other "tells" for the 209:
1) There are four horizontal lines, including the frame line, on the two sides of the curved upper center tip of the shield, rather than three. 2) The left side of the curved band that contains the words "US POSTAGE" almost touches the outer edge of the shield, whereas it does not in the other issues that have more space and a background line between the curved band and the outer edge of the shield. |
