Looks like the 48 mon Brown of 1871 You shall need specialists to comment on authenticity, beyond me. My image does not show the two characters, alongside the bottom character.
The dragon (Naga in sanscrit) (One of the four sacred animals)
The dragon is supposed to be of 5 kinds, these appear to be "The scaled dragon" that is supposed to ascend to the heavens in rain.
The Greek fret is a pattern for the symbolic motion of a heavenly body
Thankyou I have been researching the 100 mon. Maybe that's my mistake. I agree the 2 characters either side of the bottom symbol - I can't find anywhere. Hopefully, someone can shed some light. Much appreciated
Quote: This is a forgery - those characters are "sanko", or "reference".
Yup, early Japanese collectors need to be very familiar with the "sanko" marking. There are people who collect forgeries, but they are everywhere in the early issues.
