Thanks to Robin here is a link the offers some sort of explanation on the cylinder numbers (1 and 2) and control numbers (called KN numbers in Sweden). You have to scroll down to the souvenir sheet part.

David (djd),
I do have a record of the places (cities) that the numbers were found in. I was originally going to include it in database compilation of these numbers and still may do that.

I got a bit distracted by figuring out how to make a database output and this forum's codes and formatting rules work together. That is solved (hopefully).

I will see how the data I have ready (and to be done) fits on these pages and then perhaps add in the cities. Sometimes it is difficult or impossible to know what information might be of interest or use to future collectors in this regard.

However, the more ordered and sorted out, the better, as far as I am concerned.

Bee See,
Nice link provided by Mr Robin Harris to the info on Swedish numbers.

So perhaps we should use the Swede's terminology for these so as to be consistent. The 1s and 2s are Cylinder numbers and the 6-Digit numbers are Serial or Counting numbers (KN in Swedish), lets go with Serial numbers for now until the Scott and Unitrade decide to use different names, if no one has an objection of course.

2008 Sweden Lady Bug souvenir sheet with a Cylinder number at lower left corner and a 6-digit Serial number lower right. Photo courtesy Jay Smith dot com. Neat perforated lady bug too!

I noticed a Swedish booklet pane on ebay Germany last week I believe that also had a Cylinder number on it. The seller called it a word that didn't translate. I will see if I can find it again.

Link to Jay Smith store page about the Lady Bug stamps and souvenir sheet (scroll down, way down). He has found that the demand for the above souvenir sheets with the numbers has out-paced their original expectations and has a waiting list for them now.

Pricing on different Cylinder numbered sheets with and without Serial numbers present.

Sweden 2008 Lady Bug stamp.
Note the elliptical perfs centered among the regular perfs.
Same kind of perforations as Canada's Marine Life issue.

Puzzler, thanks for posting the lovely Swedish Lady Bug sheet. I was going to do it this morning but ran out of time, had to get to work.

I think that the Cylinder Numbers are actually cylinder Position numbers and refer to the side (or row) of the twin (?) panes in a press sheet. Similar to British Commonwealth stamps that have cylinder numbers AND position numbers, like this Tuvalu stamp.

These stamps were printed in twin panes of 2 x 50 = 100 stamps, and cut along the gutter and shipped as sheets of 50. So two types exist, 1A and 1B x 4 colours. A and B are the positions. #1 for each colour represents the actual cylinder plate. If a new plate is used in a reprint, the number of that colour would change. In other words a reprint could be numbered 2A 1A 1A 2A AND 2B 1B 1B 2B, if two different colour plates were changed. This would affect BOTH sheets. Numbers can change, letters can't.

With the Swedish printing I think they only show the position, not the plate, and use numbers instead of letters.

They key is to see a press sheet!

Yes indeed, nice Tuvalu, thanks for the explanation. We need to get more info on how Sweden does their stamps. Another thing to hunt for. I like it.
