Picture taken from back. So, reversed.
Thanks to Rods picture, looks like may be top margin, with + under A and border lines. pat |

Hi Pat, The first image is WA in reverse, and is a marginal inscription. The full line reads NEW SOUTH WALES POSTAGE. The Hanging Rock is a great strike! As I mentioned in the NSW numeral cancellations thread, any numeral on a stamp that is not a 1d or a 2d should be highly prized. It's rated S, being 31-49 strikes known. I don't have an example on a DLR Rod, wrong Hanging Rock! The movie was shot in Victoria. |

Quote: Rod, wrong Hanging Rock! The movie was shot in Victoria. Wow! I was getting all excited there So Pat's stamp is an inverted Wmk, any premium for that? |

Thanks bobby.
Rods WM example shows SG type 40. Would these edge letters appear as such with other types? pat

There's no premium for an inverted watermark.
The marginal inscriptions do appear for other watermarks, as do frame lines. |

Bobby had pointed to look out for numerals on other than 1d or 2d issues. (Small break from working on the main) pat #1134 - The exchange #66 - Singleton #51- Deniliquin #826 - Mandurama #326 - Taree (Thanks Bobby) From SG catalog. (In one issue I looked at, it was almost harder to find a non-invert.) |

Great stuff Pat Your 826 is actually a 326 of Taree. The 826 is very rare and only has 12 rays in the device. Now, the reason why Governments issue stamps of certain denominations is all to do with rates. So, the 2.5d was the standard overseas UPU letter rate after NSW joined the UPU. The 4d was the double intrastate/interstate standard letter rate. It was also the Registration fee until 1 October 1891. Thereafter it could've been used for a 1d local standard letter plus 3d Registration. The 6d was the standard letter rate to many overseas places. It could also be used for a standard interstate/intrastate letter plus 4d registration, until 1 October 1891. There are obviously plenty of other combinations, but these are the most common. |

Just a note about this marginal watermark - it is neither inverted nor reversed. The WA is upright and reads in reverse from the back of the stamp - as per normal Crown NSW watermarks. |

Nice collection Pat The 413 Cadia is the pick of the bunch as far as the numerals go. The pair of 1d SG288 that shows Queen Street (assumed) - this is not a NSW postmark. Anyone have an idea where this postmark is from? My gut says Hobart Tasmania but I don't really know. The 1 Ryde on the 2d Emu is a London cancellation. Nice find! The 66/99 on the 1d OS is a 99. The 2d Emu stamp to the right of the Singleton datestamp is a TPO cancellation. Hope this little bit of info helps! |
