As the merger is far from done, if to be done at all, this thread has purpose. If one is tired of reading this thread, well then, just don't. For what it is worth, dead horses have jobs to do as well: And because this is a stamp forum-- |

Why is it that when some people tire of reading about a certain issue that *THEY* feel has run its course, their proposed solution is to shut down further discourse by others who might wish to continue the discussion?
Just hit the back button or unsubscribe from the thread and go about reading about things that *DO* interest you rather than trying to trample on everyone else's freedom to engage in discussion. |

My post was simply trying to keep things light and humorous. Please note that if I wanted to shut down the discussion, I would simply lock the thread. Obviously the thread is still open, and everyone is free to comment. Also note that I do not have a choice to 'not read' every post, it is part of the job of a Moderator to read every post. This said, I am 'allowed' to post my opinion. Scott has made it clear that he floated an idea, and it is nothing more than an idea. Most folks have posted their opinions. Wringing our hands and clutching our pearls at this point, and in my opinion, does not add a lot of value. The fact that the thread was beginning to wander about signified to me that much of the topic has/had been covered. If new information presents itself, then there will certainly be many additional things to discuss. Don
Edit: In case anyone was wondering, I had previous made the two images I posted several years ago. |

Don, I should have been clearer. My response wasn't directed at you, it was at the original "Isn't it about time to close this thread?" post, which I find to be antithetical to the free flow of discourse. |

"Sigh. Then perhaps they should increase their material or have better items?"
I don't disagree with this, I was merely reporting what I have heard dealers say.
"I have not been to that many shows but A&D was always there. If there was a dealer with a desire, they could replicate his model."
revcollector noted A to Z and Gitner. Another would be Stamp Art (west coast).
"Hmmmm …….. let's do the math….. 3000 102 cards @ $5 vs three sales @ $500……hmmmm …. I wonder who has the right idea?"
Let'd do the math indeed. 3000 x$5 = $15,000, 3 x$500 = $1500 or 10 times less. But we get your point - much more work vs less work. But everyone can't only offer $50 stamps and JD was the most successful using the model he followed. |

Full disclosure, I purchased my scratch and sniff Swiss Chocolate stamps from Jim, a full sheet worth. Couldn't find those at other dealers. I also filled some holes in the non-specialized areas I collect from time to time. Back in the day, I could get that stuff from Globe Stamp Store/Parker Hayden Company (Berkeley and Walnut Creek, CA). They, Parker and Jim were just a few miles apart in Walnut Creek. Parker also did WESTPEX forever which at the backside of his run made him one of the longest or the longest continuously attending dealers at WESTPEX. Globe was a two long generation stamp store.
I write this to say, and to remind folks, that difficult to find stamps are not always expensive. Jim had (has) the hard to find stamps at the lower price end which gave me as much joy getting as the rare high end pieces other dealers have sold me at three and four figures. While I respect the stock of the other dealers mentioned, Jim's stock is in a league of its own and more importantly, at the show. To further the seasonal metaphor, many baseball players worked their way up to the Major Leagues, but when he was on, the opposing players swore Sandy Koufax, must have come down from a higher league. Currently Jim Dempsey is our Sandy Koufax (or Brooks Robinson for the non-Dodger fans). |

RodgCam - excellent article. 83, now, and hauling all his elephant still. At that age, I hope to still be hauling myself around! |

The later threads belong in a topic about favorite dealers.
Back on topic, I would like the proposal submitted to all APS members at least through the journal well before any board vote. To me, many scenarios change the fundamental premise for APS. The recent slate of members were not elected based upon making such major decisions.
APS was able to partner with ATA and AFDCS without having to merge. This seems more like an effort to save ASDA rather than solve a specific APS problem (hope and pray idea).

Stamp Dealers at NOJEX are talking about the proposed merger as a done deal. Sounds Iike the ASDA is not sustainable. |
