Off-topic, maybe. Can anyone elaborate on retouching? Who did it? Why? How? At what stage of the stamp production? I looked at our glossary and it was rather laconic.
They had earlier problems with this issue . It seems the first design had the mountains disappearing into the clouds and you had a hard time seeing the mountain range . Work was done on it for the mountain range to stand out and then later more work was done on some of the plate. By the time they got to the 1952 Royal visit issue ,they had it right .
I think there was a song written and a record in the 1960's about it by Donovan or Neilson ,"first there isn't a mountain then there is a mountain" I don't remember those days too well .....something about doing acid .
After slapping around a few employees ,we got a redesign or as the o/p said got a retouched mountain top See what you learn on a stamp chat board before you had your Sunday morning coffee !
ROGDCAM ---- Thanks for the article ,down loaded it and explains many of the issues with this series of printing .
Seems the mountain issue wasn't that clear to the author of the article . Believe having the stamps in front of me and good scans gives a clearer understanding .
